At Timely, we believe that every student in our country should have the opportunity for an excellent education through informed choices that will shape their future. We also know school schedules are complicated: if you know, you know…and trust us, we know. For years we built schedules like so many educators out there - spending endless hours only to end up with a schedule that was decent, but hardly great.

That’s why we set out to build the tool we wish we had when we were in school - hoping to save hundreds of hours of wasted time while helping schools find better schedules that enable their academic, budget, and staffing priorities. We created a solution to address the needs of school-based employees who toil away building schedules and central office employees who need visibility into them.

About the role

Come work with us as an early engineer building a product that schools and districts desperately need to improve the quality of the education they deliver.

As a Founding Software Engineer, you will work with the CTO and product/engineering teams to build the Timely product end-to-end across the stack. In the process, you’ll help to establish the technical foundation for Timely at each stage of its growth over the next few years. Among the most important elements of this role are understanding the scheduling needs of customers and translating that to a robust data model that powers the frontend, API and optimization layers of Timely’s solution. You will also establish the technical culture for the team, working with the CTO to hire, mentor and grow the team as the product develops.

Roles & Responsibilities

• Design, implement, test and monitor product and technical features from the frontend UI all the way to our backend services.
• Establish technical patterns and architectures to allow Timely to scale with users and with more engineers working against the codebase.
• Define and iterate the core data model powering the Timely application and optimization engine.
• Deep dive into the scheduling product domain with stakeholders from product, customer success and business to inform product and data design.
• Set reliability targets for our systems and help troubleshoot and improve when they don’t meet these expectations.
• Establish interfaces with customer success and integration teams to allow for streamlined onboarding and integration of each unique district and school with the core Timely product.
• Establish engineering best practices around production quality, technical debt, discovery, and other workflows that allow the team to ship quality features and learn from customers quickly.
• Combine standards and tools with strong mentorship and feedback to scale the engineering team over time.

What we look for in candidates

• 5+ years of experience building and scaling production systems using the following technologies or their equivalents: AWS cloud architectures, Python/Nodejs services, REST/gRPC APIs, React frontends.
• Ability to maintain production SLAs using methodologies such as integration/unit testing, application instrumentation for monitoring/alerting, and on-call rotations.
